Aleks Halili's Experience in Ecuador

February 21,2022

In Ecuador, we visited the Amazon rainforest, Andean paramo, Galapagos, and many other locations. It was truly humbling to experience different ecosystems and cultures for the first time. I felt a greater sense of connection to species I had never encountered before. This motivated me to better protect natural ecosystems for their intrinsic value and to repair the damage our human society has inflicted.

I also learned about methods in which nature can provide services to us when treated properly. For example, many frog populations are disappearing because of habitat loss and a greater susceptibility to chytrid fungi that is most likely caused by climate change. These same species have yielded potential antibiotic and antifungal medicines from their skin and a potential cure to deafness through genetic research.

I received the Global Education Scholarship for this study abroad experience. I am grateful that the scholarship covered my entire program fee, activity expenses, in-country travel, lodging, insurance, most meals, and more. It lifted a massive weight off of my shoulders. I’m glad that my program leaders often reminded us to apply for this scholarship well in advance of the application deadline.
