The Global Education Office offers a week-long celebration of study abroad

Every year, around mid-September, a familiar sight is found on the Drillfield – a white 120-ft tent framed by flags from around the world. Under the tent, students can explore over 100 study abroad programs.

Along with the annual fair, the Global Education Office, part of Outreach and International Affairs, is hosting Virginia Tech’s first Study Abroad Week. Each day features a different event designed to inform students on how they can integrate international experiences into their education.

The week’s featured events are:

Monday, September 24 – Study Abroad 101 Presentation

The Global Education Peer Advisors will offer a Study Abroad 101 presentation at the Black Cultural Center in the Squires Student Center at 6 p.m. The presentation will be live streamed on the Global Education Facebook page and parents are welcome to tune in.

Tesday, September 25 – Funding your Study Abroad: Scholarships and Grants Student Panel

A panel of student scholarship recipients will share insight on various scholarship and grant opportunities. The panel discussion will start at 6 p.m. in the Newman Library Multipurpose Room.

Wednesday, September 26 – Global Education Fall Fair

Nearly 80 information tables will be featured at the Fall Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Drillfield. Attendees can speak directly with program representatives and study abroad alumni. Be sure to tune in to our social media - we will be sharing the list of programs that will be in attendance along with a map of where those program tables will be set up. The Global Education Office will be closed during fair hours.

Thursday, September 27 – What I did last Summer 2018 Student Panel

Fresh from international experiences, students on this panel studied abroad this past summer. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Newman Library Multipurpose Room.

Friday, September 28 – Semester-Long and Beyond Student Panel

Leaving Virginia Tech for a semester or longer can seem daunting. Starting at 6 p.m. in the Newman Library Multipurpose Room, hear about why the experience was worth it from students who took on the challenge.

In the spirit of internationalization, other events and displays will be offered on campus throughout the week.

  • On Monday, September 24 at 5:30 p.m., the Global Education Office and the Virginia Tech Honors College is holding a seminar on “Creating unique responses to application prompts”. The event is part of a Scholarship Seminar Series designed to provide students with professional development for both national and international service and scholarship opportunities. Contact Betty Anderson at anderson.betty@vt.edu to register.

  • The College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences will launch a Study Abroad Exhibit on Thursday, September 27 at 3:30 p.m. on the second floor of Newman Library. The exhibit features student reflections and photographs.

  • Throughout the week, Global Education Photo Exhibits will be displayed in Newman Library and at The Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center.
