Following a semester spent in Ghana, Nina Zegler joined the Global Education Office in the 2014-2015 as a peer ambassador.
Nina had directly enrolled at the University of Ghana. She chose the country for several reasons. “For one, it was very cheap. Two, I knew it would give me a really different and unique cultural experience. Three, the rainforest!!! And four, the program’s deadline had not yet passed [laughs],” Nina said.
“[The experience] I think made me so much more independent and confident—my friends and family noticed. It also instilled in me a constant longing to get back into the world and experiences new countries and cultures again and again.”
As a peer advisor, Nina loved goofing around with the other student workers. She recalls writing haikus and puns and pulling pranks on April Fool’s Day. “I miss the GEO family dearly,” she said.
After graduation, Nina began working as an ER medical scribe, and will be starting physician assistant school later this year. Before beginning school again, she will be traveling to Colombia for six and a half weeks as a last hoorah.
Nina’s tips:
Prioritize study abroad! Make time, and find a program that works for your budget.
Study abroad is a great talking point in interviews and on applications. It makes you stand out, so be sure to take advantage of that!
