10 Things I Wish I Knew Before Going Abroad

As many students prepare to head out on summer/fall programs, here are a few pieces of advice from past peer advisors:

1. Research local customs before you go. 2. Pack light! You won’t need as many things as you think (Plus, you can always buy the awesome local clothing when you get there!). 3. Bring comfortable clothes and shoes, you won’t want to dress up every single day. 4. You can’t judge a place until you get there and experience it for yourself. 5. Don’t exchange money at airports and use a bank that doesn’t charge international fees. 6. Try new things. Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. 7. Don’t be just a tourist. 8. You may spend all of your money, but that’s okay! You will regret missing out on an experience because of a tight budget. 9. Practice the local language, even if you hardly know it. 10. Wait until you’re better at bargaining to buy souvenirs.

Also, a reminder for students who are participating in bilateral exchange, third-party provider, non-VT, or direct enroll programs this upcoming summer, fall, or academic year -- The mandatory Pre-Flight (formerly Pre-Departure Orientation) is next week, Tuesday, April 18. You'll have the opportunity to meet with fellow students who have been abroad to your destinations and have valuable insight to offer!
