HOKIES GO GLOBAL

INTO THE HEART OF DARKNESS

Photographer: Matthew Lacey

This was about halfway through our 4 hour trip down the Shiripuno River to Siripuno Lodge. The motorized canoe snaked from bank to bank, swerving to miss submerged logs that clogged the river. This was the longest canoe commute of our trip but it was breathtakingly beautiful. We were punging deep into the territory of the Huaorani indigenous tribe, one of the last truly uncontacted peoples. Everyone was on the edge of their seats scanning the banks for caiman, anaconda, macaws, and jaguars. (Chiripuno River, Ecuadorian Amazon - Tropical Ecology, Ecuador program)

WHERE IN THE WORLD

MAGYAR TRAM

Photographer: Kaitlin Greenleaf

Magyar means Hungary in the Hungarian language. The yellow trams run all around Budapest. This one captures one crossing the Green Bridge over the Danube river. (Budapest, Hungary - Virginia Tech Exchange Program, University College Dublin)

WORLD IN MOTION

THE WALLED CITY

Photographer: Anna Pendleton

One of our first stops on our trip was to Avila, Spain. The city is frozen in the past with its walled barrier. The entire town is encased in a wall that was used as protection. Before entering into the city, we stopped outside to see it from above. There was a painter at the same spot painting the city. (Avila, Spain - VT Camino program)

SPIRIT OF UT PROSIM: THAT I MAY SERVE

A GROWING MIND

Photographer: Meredith Moreno

One of my brightest student, Queen, learns the words for different types of weather in English. (Rilima, Rwanda - Lugano, Switzerland program)

FACULTY AND STAFF

KICHWA DANCERS IN STREET FESTIVAL

Photographer: Ryan Stewart

Returning from Laguna de Cuicocha, our study abroad group encountered the main road through Quiroga closed due to a town parade. The students and I took the opportunity to witness many of the traditional dances and customs of the Kichwa people that live in this portion of Ecuador, including colored-dressed young women seen dancing here through the rain-slickened streets. (Quiroga, Ecuador - Ecuador Wintermester)

INSTAFAMOUS TRAVELER

DESERT, BRICK, AND SKY

Photographer: Michael Folta

The building is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dabi. I took it during a trip as a student representative for the Solar Decathlon in Dubai, UAE. (Abu Dabi, United Arab Emirates - Solar Decathlon Opening Ceremony)

The photos will be appearing in displays throughout campus, so be on the lookout and see them in person. Even though the contest has come to a close, please continue sharing your photos with us! Instagram: @vtabroad or email vtabroad@vt.edu.
