There is an exciting addition on Virginia Tech’s campus for travelers – the new Passport Acceptance Facility managed by Student Engagement and Campus Life (SECL). The facility is located on the first floor of Squires Student Center across from the Ticket Office near Old Dominion Ballroom.
Clayton Kolb, the associate director of Student Engagement and Campus Life, says a similar service was implemented at the University of Kentucky. Seeing an opportunity to provide the Virginia Tech/Blacksburg community a useful service, Clayton wrote the U.S. State Department requesting to become an acceptance facility. It took almost a year for the request to be processed, but once the approval came in, the facility was launched within a week’s time!
See the tables below for pricing information.
If you just need a photo, the price is $15. To see more pricing information, click here.
Now is great time to get a passport or have yours renewed. Passport offices are anticipating a huge rush, as well as longer processing times. The execution fee is also going to increase. For those planning to travel abroad for Spring Break in March, Clayton suggests applying as soon as possible.
For passport application processing, applicants must bring a form of identification (a driver's license or Hokie passport are acceptable) and a birth certificate. See the acceptable document list/passport checklist for more information. Make sure to grab all the necessary documents while you're home during Winter Break!
Currently, the Passport Facility is accepting appointments and walk-ins (but appointments are preferred). They're only open on weekdays, but hope to have Saturday hours in the future. See the facility’s hours here. Another helpful tip: Only cash or check is accepted.
With around 1,200 students going abroad each year, this facility is likely to be of great use in our Virginia Tech and Blacksburg community. A huge round of applause for SECL!
