People and Pumpkins

The Fulbright Program provides funding for students, scholars, teachers, and professionals to undertake graduate study, advanced research, and teaching. We are excited to be featuring two of our Fulbright at Virginia Tech scholars, Ndidi Ngwuluka and Diana Abu-Ghunmi, as they give us some insight into their experiences.

As the day drew near, the excitement escalated. We were not certain what to expect. We gathered at Gateway Center parking lot located at 902 Prices Fork Road; different nationalities and diversity in display. We interacted as we converged and got into the bus. Ndidi and Diana joined the trip to Sinkland Pumpkin Farm in Riner Virginia, on Sunday, October 11, 2015. The trip was sponsored by the International Support Office of VT with Ms Belinda Pauley, the J-1 Program Manager, as our Trip Leader. We met with another scholar from Egypt, Fatma.

The trio set out on arrival to explore the farm. The first activity was the hay ride; sitting on hay was fun as we drove to the pumpkins on a lovely sunny day; perfect for a ride. Then we found ourselves in the midst of pumpkins, amazing view, so colorful. We plunged in and roamed amongst the pumpkins taking pictures. Of course we picked our choice pumpkins, feeling happy with ourselves that we were ready for Halloween. It was thrilling that we harvested our pumpkins rather than buying from shops. After such exploit and hunt for choice pumpkins, we were hot and thirsty and so we went for some ice cream. Then, we chose to get lost in the corn maze but we still found our way out without asking! Oh the pumpkin slingshot was another fun as we tried to display our amateur skills and had our laughs. The live music was fabulous and of course the animal farm was educative and a place of attraction for the guests to the farm especially the children. It was relaxing to be with nature and have fun at the same time. We appreciate the international office for organizing such an event.
